A new litter is a change your cat has to accept, not just a bag you pour into a tray. If you are switching to tofu cat litter with a colour-observation feature, a separate-tray introduction is especially useful: it gives your cat a choice while keeping the new litter unmixed.
Prepare before opening the bag
Read the current directions, check the recommended fill depth and choose a tray your cat can enter and turn around in comfortably. Start with a clean, dry tray. Keep the familiar litter and tray available; do not remove your cat’s established toilet option simply to force a faster switch.
Cats Protection suggests offering new litter in one tray while leaving familiar litter in other trays as one way to introduce a change. There is no universal deadline for acceptance. Let your cat’s comfortable use guide the pace.
Keep the new choice easy to find
Put the additional tray in a quiet, accessible place rather than a noisy or awkward corner. Avoid a location where another cat can block access. Keep food and water away from the toilet area. If a new tray is difficult to reach, you will not know whether the problem is the litter or the location.
Once the setup is in place, allow your cat to explore. Avoid putting them into the tray repeatedly or interrupting them while they toilet. Reward calm interaction in ordinary ways without making the tray a busy social space.
Why not default to mixing?
Gradual mixing can be appropriate for some ordinary litter changes, but mixed materials make a colour-monitoring result harder to interpret. Purrify’s FAQ recommends using the product alone for the clearest observation. A separate tray lets you keep that distinction from the start.
Do not record a mixed-litter colour as though it were a reliable, cat-specific finding. Read the current product FAQ and use the supplied packaging guide when the cat is using the product by itself.
Watch comfort before watching colour
- Notice whether your cat enters and digs without hesitation.
- Keep both trays clean while the choice is available.
- If the new option is avoided, reconsider access, texture and location before buying more.
- Make one adjustment at a time so you can understand the response.
Do not punish accidents. A sudden toileting change can have a medical cause, so contact your vet rather than assuming it is just a preference issue.
Build the long-term routine
Once your cat is comfortably using the new litter, review the setup before removing any familiar option. Multi-cat households still need enough accessible trays. For the observation step, use our daily record guide; for supplies, check the current Australian Purrify pack options.
